Student Finance England 2025: what's changing and how to prepare

Maintenance loan thresholds, tuition fee updates and a practical checklist for new applicants.

Every year Student Finance England updates the thresholds that determine how much support you can borrow, and every year a number of applicants miss out simply because they applied late or sent the wrong evidence.

The tuition fee loan is paid directly to your provider, so there is nothing to find up front. The maintenance loan is means-tested against household income and paid to you in three instalments across the academic year, in line with your term dates.

Apply as early as you can. Applications open months before term starts, and you do not need a confirmed place to begin — you can update your course details later. Have your National Insurance number, passport or birth certificate, and household income evidence ready before you start.

Our advisers complete the funding application with you at no charge. If you are unsure whether you qualify, that is exactly the conversation to have before you apply.
